In a world where grammar, punctuation, and language errors of all kinds are abundant, proofreading is becoming important.

A love for the language paired with a desire to communicate with clarity gave rise to an exceptional eye for detail. All my life, I've always noticed when a sentence is  incorrect, or when a comma has gone rogue. Personally, I also never hit send on an email until I've triple checked it.

More and more people adopt AI writing and spellchecking tools and, though AI may be able to spot simple spelling mistakes and (some) common grammatical errors, it will never be as precise as skilled human error detection. Only human insight can make judgment calls on stylistic choices and suggest substantive changes to strengthen the essence of writing.

I spent years looking over coworkers’ emails and internal communications, memos, and reports because I was asked, and I enjoyed it. I prided myself on knowing grammar and spelling, while others would often say, 'Oh, I just use spellcheck'!

Proofreading was then the obvious choice for me moving forward. However, I was astounded to find out how much more there was still to know when completing my proofreading and editing courses, gaining distinctions. I still regularly revise all areas and style manuals, with a focus on –
        the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA)
        the Modern Language Association's MLA Style Manual
        the Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS)
